With the current
economic status of the world, I would not say it’s the worst, but it’s not
great at all since there are a lot of people who are unemployed right now, we
try to find as many sources of income as we possibly can. One good source of
income is the internet. Thank God for the web, being online doesn’t only limit
us to just watching videos, downloading stuff, or expanding our online social
network anymore. We can, in fact, make a living out of it.
There are tons
of opportunities popping out over the internet. Some are scam, but there are
still some that are legitimate and real. I was unemployed too for a couple of
months after I resigned from my first real job after my university education.
Since I was living independent from my family, I was worried where I would get
the money to pay for my bills, my rent, food, and yeah, the luxuries that a
single lady in a city would not want to deprive herself of. I wanted to prove to
my family, especially to my father, that I could stand on my own. He had always
wanted for me to go back to our hometown after I graduated from the university
and find a job there but I didn’t want to. I’ve been living by myself for a
long time already and I couldn’t go back being monitored by him everyday, not
even able to go out to see my friends whenever I wanted to. Yes, he was strict
as hell. Understandably so, I’m an only child, and uhuh, I’m a daughter. The
day after my graduation, my allowance stopped. I actually told my father to
stop sending me money already since I already had a part time job, which became
full time after graduation, during my last semester in college. I was just 19
and I was very proud of such an achievement--telling my father I didn’t want to
go home just yet and that I would provide for myself. And I was able to do
those things, until I quit that job I had. I wanted to go home already because,
well, let’s face it, it wasn’t easy to live in the city with bills left and
right at the age of 19. But I didn’t give up and I sent my resume to every
company I could think of working at. Not really every company. lol Seriously, I was a little lazy at that
time. My mind wasn’t set to working 8 hours everyday again, with a boss that’s
up my back all the time. So I started rummaging the internet for whatever job I
could get. I tried the PTC sites (I found some that work and I’m still doing
them until now and yes, they also provided me with extra small cash for
emergencies) but these sites would take you quite some time before you get
paid. I needed money instantly.
Then I came
across a blog (thanks to this blogger I can’t remember who anymore) talking
about this website where she’s been working at from home. I was curious so I
checked the website and lo and behold! I found the best thing that I ever found
on the internet--oDesk. I studied the website, created an account for free, and
started working on my profile. I was lost at some point since nobody helped me
get started with it. But I really wanted to do good on this one so I really
studied the site and read everything that I could from their FAQs. As soon as
my account was ready, I started applying for some jobs that I was good at. I
started with $2/hour on my rate and now that I’m on my 3rd year on this
website, I’ve increased it to $5/hour. It may seem a little amount, but that’s
just actually a front. I sometimes get hourly-priced or fixed-priced jobs. Here’s
a photo of one of my recent projects on oDesk. I had to convert a PDF file to
word. They were scanned images so I had to do it manually a.k.a typing and I
was paid $65. Not bad.
I was inactive
at oDesk for almost a year because I found a full-time job after a couple of
months of being unemployed. oDesk paid my bills and rent for a couple of months
but if I’m being honest, oDesk was not enough for me. I told you I was lazy and
I could not focus on my job while I was working in my room near my bed where I
could lie down anytime I wanted to. So I decided to find a job with a real
workplace. But if you are really determined and you have self-discipline, working
at oDesk can actually be a career for you. You can earn a lot and stay at home.
You can control the hours of your work and still get paid with dollars.
I still do some small
projects on oDesk every now and then however, I only choose the ones that I can
commit with since I have a different full-time job now. So if you out there
have a lot of skills to offer, oDesk may just be the venue for you to show them
and put them into good use while being paid. It’s not easy when you’re just
starting since you’ll be competing with other contractors with more experience
on oDesk but don’t lose hope and just keep on applying until you get hired.
Once you get hired, do great on that job because your future on oDesk also
relies on the positive and high feedback that the employers are going to leave
on your profile. If you have exemplary feedback from them, time will come that
you won’t have to apply anymore because the employers will be the ones inviting
you for an interview… just like me ;)
